PET/CT Imaging

PET/CT imaging combines two advanced imaging technologies to provide detailed information about the body’s tissues and organs. This allows physicians to evaluate metabolic activity, identify areas of concern, and make informed decisions about diagnosis and treatment planning.

Preparing for Your PET/CT Scan

Proper preparation helps ensure accurate imaging results. Please follow these guidelines before your appointment:
  • Allow approximately two hours for your appointment.
  • 24 hours before: Avoid strenuous exercise, chewing gum, and chewable vitamins.
  • 4–6 hours before: Do not eat or drink anything other than water.
  • Medications: Most routine medications may be taken as prescribed. Patients with diabetes should consult their healthcare provider for specific instructions regarding medications, insulin, and blood glucose management.
  • Clothing: Wear comfortable clothing and avoid metal accessories. A gown will be provided if needed.
Additional preparation instructions may be provided based on your individual needs.

What to Expect During Your Scan

  • When you arrive, a small amount of radioactive tracer will be administered through a vein in your arm. This tracer helps highlight metabolic activity during imaging.
  • You will then relax quietly for approximately 45–60 minutes while the tracer circulates throughout your body.
  • During the scan, you will lie on an examination table that moves through the PET/CT scanner. The scanner is open at both ends, and imaging typically takes approximately 20 minutes.
  • Remaining still during the scan helps ensure clear, accurate images.

If you experience claustrophobia or have concerns about enclosed spaces, please notify your healthcare provider before your appointment so appropriate accommodations can be discussed.

After Your PET/CT Scan

  • Most patients can return to their normal daily activities following their appointment.
  • We recommend drinking plenty of water to help your body eliminate the tracer. You may also be advised to limit close contact with pregnant individuals and young children for several hours following your scan.
  • Your care team will provide any additional instructions before you leave.
