RADIATION THERAPIST JOB DESCRIPTION

Under the direction of the Chief Radiation Therapist the Lead Radiation Therapist, the Staff Radiation Therapist is responsible for the delivery of radiation therapy treatment as prescribed by the radiation oncologist, daily maintenance and quality assurance checks for the equipment, maintenance of the inventory of department supplies, and administrative quality assurance checks as assigned.

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Responsible for daily patient care and education.
    • Appropriately involves the patient and their family in care and care decisions.
    • Maintains and demonstrates respect for patient confidentiality and modesty.
    • Explains the treatment procedure to patients.
    • Arranges daily radiation treatment schedules.
    • Monitors patients’ physical and physiological responses and reactions to treatment and refers patients for appropriate management as needed.
  2. Administers radiation therapy treatment accurately and safely.
    • Monitors and reports treatment variances and inconsistencies.
    • Accurately documents all treatment delivery information in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR).
  3. Responsible for the safe and accurate utilization of all aspects of the EMR and Record and Verify system.
  4. Possesses knowledge of all scheduling, treatment, image review, and billing procedures involving the EMR system.
  5. Demonstrates the ability to accurately perform all required New Start Chart Checks, Chart Preps, and Scheduling.
  6. Positions, immobilizes, and aligns patients according to the treatment plan while effectively evaluating and resolving setup issues.
  7. Understands the function of all equipment, accessories, treatment methods, policies, procedures, and protocols and applies this knowledge appropriately.
  8. Assists the Chief/Lead Radiation Therapist in developing new techniques or resolving clinical problems.
  9. Participates in and appropriately documents the Time Out Procedure for every treatment verification and daily treatment.
  10. Utilizes the Quality Assurance (QA) program to encompass all aspects of treatment, treatment delivery, and quality patient care.
  11. Demonstrates appropriate knowledge of growth and development principles across all life stages, from infancy through geriatrics, and provides age-appropriate patient care according to department policies and procedures.
  12. Demonstrates an understanding of the patient’s functional mobility assessment tool and safely mobilizes patients using appropriate mechanical assistive devices such as ceiling lifts and lateral transfer devices.
  13. Demonstrates cooperation and responsiveness to all staff members.

  14. Attends regularly scheduled Radiation Therapist staff meetings.
  15. Attends regularly scheduled continuing education activities.
  16. Participates in the clinical instruction and evaluation of Radiation Therapy Technology students.
  17. Works flexible shifts as directed by the Chief and Lead Radiation Therapists based on patient volume and departmental needs.
    • Provides coverage on weekends and holidays when necessary.
    • Adapts to contingency plans in response to workload and scheduling changes.
  18. Rotates to other treatment areas, including Simulation Suites, Treatment Units, Stereo Units, and HDR Suites, as directed by the Chief/Lead Radiation Therapist.
  19. May be required to travel to network satellite clinics as directed by the Chief Radiation Therapist.
  20. Performs other duties as assigned by the Chief Radiation Therapist.
  21. Maintains proficient technical knowledge and skills, including the operation of equipment, tools, procedures, and effective troubleshooting.
  22. Establishes and maintains effective professional relationships with physicians, management, peers, patients, and their families.
  23. Maintains a positive attitude and professional appearance.
  24. Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills to resolve conflicts and relay information clearly to staff, patients, and hospital personnel.

  32. Demonstrates proficiency in Radiation Oncology Information Systems, including ARIA, Eclipse, Oncentra, and Parallels.
  33. Demonstrates proficiency in operating iX and TrueBeam systems. Experience with Ethos is considered a plus.

Required

  • Valid Nevada State License in Radiation Therapy
  • Valid ARRT certification in Radiation Therapy must be obtained by the end of the 3-month probation period.
  • Valid BLS certification
  • Update all current licensing in Teams Platform
